General Practice Dentistry Residency

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, Northwestern Memorial Hospital is proud to be a nationally recognized academic medical center. Virtually every medical specialty is represented by the over 1,600 physicians on the medical staff at Northwestern Memorial which serves as the primary teaching hospital for Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The General Practice Dentistry Residency is a CODA-accredited one-year residency program and offers two positions each year. It is housed in Arkes Pavilion at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Residency Program Objectives

Northwestern’s General Practice Dentistry Residency is a robust education program with the goal of developing dentists to perform excellent comprehensive dentistry. Through the diverse experiences offered within Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the program objective is to equip residents with the skills to treat all patients to high standards of care, regardless of medical complexity. Graduates of the program will possess skills to elevate the patient care experience of the Chicagoland community and the future communities they serve.

About the Program

 Areas of Focus

At Northwestern Memorial, all patient referrals to the Hospital Dental Service arise initially as a result of inpatient consultation requests from physicians throughout all departments in the hospital. The training program focuses on several key areas:

  • Provision of comprehensive and complete inpatient and outpatient dental care within the hospital setting.
  • Management and staffing of a 24 hour, seven day a week, oral and dental emergency service through the hospital's Emergency Department.
  • Selected off-service rotations, including experience in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, General Medicine, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Hospital administration protocols and procedures as they affect the practice of Dentistry in the hospital.
  • Clinical and didactic training in relevant dental and medical specialty areas using the resources of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
  • Active participation in department presentations and journal club meetings, as well as involvement in medical and dental hospital teaching rounds.

 Requirements & Eligibility

  • Applicants must be graduates of a predoctoral CODA-accredited dental education program
  • Applicants must pass the INBDE standardized exam before matriculation
  • Eligible applicants be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, or Canadian Citizen

Applications will be accepted until October 1, 2025. Interviews will be held at the end of October. Offers will be extended immediately following interviews on a rolling basis.
